For any of you who have wondered; yes I really am an Idiot. I completely forgot about hanging this post on-line until I read its counterpart over at Braja’s (DOH!).
Braja and I were corresponding the other day about comments on our blogs and how, although we appreciate a lot of the comments we receive, sometimes less is more.
Just typing that last sentence strikes me as odd. After all, do we not all desire the recognition and appreciation that come through comments? Of course, we do. But one of the things I’ve discovered about myself through this internet adventure of blogging is that, when it comes to comments, I prefer quality over quantity.
In other words, if you can’t think of anything to say, don’t say it.
Here’s how to know if you have nothing of value to add after reading a blog post:
• You find yourself staring at a blank comment box for more that 30 seconds
• You can’t remember what the post was about
• You become covered in cob-webs from sitting too long in one position
• Your ass goes to sleep in your chair
• You decide you will come back and comment right after you return from having the root-canal you’ve been putting off
• You think you owe this blogger a comment so you’d better write something
• You don't really want to comment but are trying to boost your readership (and if you leave a comment then maybe you’ll get one back)
Don’t get me wrong; I love my blog friends and appreciate the time it takes to read whatever I’ve posted, so a thousand thank-yous for your support. But I’m not one to judge the work I’m doing by counting comments, so you can let yourself off that hook. If you’ve got something you want to say, bring it on. I love to hear from you. If not, maybe next time.
Having said all that, a word of caution, dear friends: internet communication, whether it be commenting, tweeting, or emailing is tricky. It is a difficult medium through which to convey the feelings behind your words. I have seen many instances where comments, meant to be funny or cute, have been misinterpreted by the receiver. Please give some thought to how well you know a person before trying to be funny. And, keep in mind that, even if the blogger to whom you are commenting, knows you well enough to “get” your sense of humor, lots of other people who are seeing your public comment do not. You don’t want to come off as an horse's arse in front of the entire blogosphere. I’ve tried it, and trust me, it sucks.

Well said :)
Over at my house
The comments are few
But each one is a keeper.
Peace - Rene
uhmmm what did you say...let me re read..LOL
Excellent! ;-)
Amen dude. Seriously. Well said.
My ass is constantly asleep in my chair, but that has more to do with my ass than with the blog posts that I'm reading, so I keep commenting.
It's fun to close comments every once in a while. I've been blogging for over a year now and I've done it exactly once.
My pet peeve is when I can tell that people skim my posts. Skimming is fine, faking it in the comments is totally uncool, imo.
I like carrots.
;)
I have to disagree in theory. I could care less for the random-readership-boosting comments. But I like it when regular readers comment, because I like to get to know them. If there is no comment then I can't email them or respond. The connectivity of the blogosphere is lost...
My rule of thumb is that if I took the time to read someone's post then I'll leave a comment as my way to thank the person for taking the time to share a part of their life. Even if that's all I have to say...
For fear of sounding like that horse's ass... Well said!
I find myself with this inexplicable urge to comment but I really have nothing to say. Which is, in itself, saying something, isn't it?
This was a very moving story IB. I particularly liked the bit with the dramatic car crash and the way the young hero found God!! Only joking of course, I do try to read other bloggers posts with my eyes open! (I do hope that I'm not a horses arse here!)
You've actually stolen my thunder a bit here! I was going to make my post all about comments this week but will now have to rack my burnt head for more wordy shenanigans!
I couldn't agree more with you on this post. I do get comments and I'm always appreciate of them. However, due to time restrictions and often reading blogs that become stockpiled for a few days, I can't always post comments on other blogs and it will often come down to me commenting when something really strikes a cord with me.
For instance, I'm not a father so often cannot relate to posts when bloggers talk about children, babies etc!
God forbid that if I did 'cheaply' comment I'd end up saying something like -
'That's lovely. Thank you for sharing your beautiful experience with me!'
Whilst I can appreciate the feelings and will always appreciate their time spent on their expressions I feel that I don't want to come across as 'cheap!'
If somebody's blog tells me how they cooked a meal or even gives me the ingredients for it I just know that I can't say something like " Oooooo, I can smell it's loveliness right through my monitor!"
Hang on, that's a lie! Sometimes I do!
So maybe I also post comments depending on MY OWN MOOD TO!!
I'll also sometimes comment in reply to a comment that I don't like!
I do know that a lot of different age groups and also people from different countries read my blog so am also highly aware that my style of writing, as well as my humour will not always translate in the way it could do if I wrote everything 'universally straight?'
I think this is the same for your truly intriguing blog and many other blogs out there to.
Jezuzz! This comment is so long that I could have made my own post with it!!!
My arse hurts!
ok, no comment! ;)
Oo! Sounds like you've got it baa-aaad! Take two of THESE, and if you're "not over yourself" by morning, give me a jingle-- I'll see what other tricks I might have to help you with your "problem." LOL!
I'm still laughing! Man, you've got your hands sooo full! LOL! Too bad there isn't some sort of blog commenter spray repellent to remedy yourself of such a situation. Where is Billy Mays when you need him? Possibly he had just that "some sort" cooking on the back burner. How untimely his death. The audacity. LOL! Maybe you could use a dose of Stephen Stills: "Well there’s a rose in the fisted glove and the eagle flies with the dove, and if you can’t be with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with."
I've done you the favor of removing myself from your blog "followers" list. I hope it helps to lighten the load.
Due to having consumed a few glasses of wine, I have nothing sensible to say at the moment..... so I will return tomorrow! :O)
You are right about commenting. Sometimes I read a post and go to the comment section and if nothing comes to me immediately I go on with my life. Not every post gets a comment. Does that make me a lurker?
"It is a difficult medium through which to convey the feelings behind your words."
I can be too sarcastic for my own good. That's why I use a LOT of smileys and lol's. : )
(massaging ass furiously to wake it up)
Right on, Braja! Uh, er, I mean IB! (wink)
I grok what you are saying. The quality angle is important, because it can signify a deeper investment in the subject matter.
Don't sell yourself short: this was a very well-said piece. (bowing)
I agree.
I have an ass? Is it supposed to fall asleep?
Sometimes I have nothing to say, so I just say HI!
dang. Did i offend someone??
it wouldn't be the first time.....gulp.
and now in serious response mode- I love hearing from friends. It's comforting to me when I open my gmail and see comments from friends. Makes my heart happy and all that...
I also love getting thoughts from new people- new insights or funny replies.
You're blessed to have the Sparkle Fart removed from your heavy load and perhaps now you realize why her photo looks like that...it's no accident, my friend...
And yes,I'm back :) Well, at least on Jahnu's computer while he's out....mine should be fixed today. \I just thought I'd tell the world that....
:)
So, so true! I have been on both sides, leaving a comment that was taken the wrong way and getting a comment that struck me funny. It is VERY tricky to really say what you mean and mean what you say in the "commenting" and "twittering" world.
Very good advice. Thank you!
I honestly don't think in terms of commenting just so that someone comes to visit me. It's basically the same high-quality bloggers (10-12) who read my posts and comment. I say what I want and if it doesn't meet someone's expectations, too bad.
hmmm, now i don't know whether to leave a comment and risk everyone not getting what i'm saying or not leave a comment. eh, whatev. cool post : )
